Global Interior Design London - Blog
Recently I received a phonecall from a celebrated London fashionista and highly-respected design journalist. She had a specific question for me for an article she was writing – she wanted to know how London interior design consultancies work with the “Mid-Century Modern” style. I was delighted, because Mid-Century Modern is a style that I love and one that our interior design consultancy often gets to explore.
So I began by explaining that "Mid-Century Modern" refers to a style that can be used by interior design consultancies to recollect the period 1933 to 1965. The style was inspired by Frank Lloyd Wright's principles of organic architecture and the simple designs that characterised the International Style and Bauhaus movements. I have seen some projects by London interior design consultancies that really focus on this idea of "loosening" that came with Mid-Century Modern, which saw a relaxation of the formality and rigidity that had characterised previous shapes. I also discussed how interior design consultancies sometimes choose to interpret Mid-Century Modern more from the perspective of materials and things. Technological breakthroughs played an important role in the 1930s and 1940s, as factories that had previously operated in cramped central London buildings began to move outside London into more semi-urban districts with expanded custom-built facilities. The result was a consumer boom and a fresh, powerful expressiveness in home décor objects of the period – many of which are available to interior design consultancies to work with today, whether as replicas or as limited editions.
I finished by reflecting on the playful nature of Mid-Century Modern. Interior design consultancies can apply the style to both large and small London residences or offices by making use of Mid-Century Modern furniture pieces and accessories that are available from London distributors. For example, I know of one well-known interior design consultancy that focused an entire Mid-Century Modern design concept around a beautiful moulded amoeba-inspired shape that was featured on a striking piece of 1940s furniture.
In summary, Mid-Century Modern is a great style and one that is often used by London’s interior design consultancies today. I have been excited to see that it is going strong even after so many years! And of course, if you need assistance with a Mid-Century Modern project, please feel free to contact our interior design consultancy – we’d be delighted to help.
